The Girls Leadership Program, previously known as Girls Camp, is a core initiative aimed at empowering young girls aged 12-18 to become confident leaders and make sound life choices. Through mentorship and engaging workshops, we focus on building self-esteem, critical thinking skills, and a strong sense of purpose.
At Women's Empowerment Development, Inc. (WED, Inc.), we have been guiding young ladies through their journey to confident womanhood since 2013. Our commitment is to invest in today's girls, shaping the leaders of tomorrow.
Our comprehensive program provides a safe, supportive, and empowering environment where participants engage in workshops and activities focused on critical life skills and personal development. Key areas include:
Goal-Setting & Decision-Making: Equipping girls with the tools to set ambitious goals and make informed choices for their future.
Self-Esteem & Personal Well-being: Fostering a strong sense of self-worth and addressing topics like pregnancy prevention and the dangers of substance abuse.
Civic Awareness: Integrating an understanding of local politics and policies to encourage active, "citizen-ready" participation in their communities.
Mentorship & Role Models: Connecting participants with successful women, many of whom grew up in similar public housing and low-income neighborhoods, demonstrating that "regardless of your life’s circumstance, with hard work and dedication, success is inevitable."
Practical Skills: Past sessions have included vital topics such as identifying abuse in healthy relationships and self-defense, taught by experts like MMA fighters.
A core differentiator of the Girls Leadership Program is our commitment to showcasing relatable success stories. Our speakers are often women from the very communities we serve, providing tangible proof that aspirations can be achieved. We aim for long-term impact, focusing on outcomes from ages 13-16 through womanhood, with volunteers conducting quarterly follow-up calls to support continued growth.
The program is a direct response to the need to help young girls from impoverished neighborhoods avoid generational pitfalls, fostering attitudes and behaviors that lead to sustained success. By focusing on prevention and intervention, we empower girls to "control their own destiny" and become productive citizens across Virginia.
Join us in empowering the next generation of female leaders.
